The Positive Revolution has a multiplicity of applications and an infiltration of industry Positive design is one of those areas. Attending sci arc I have been exposed to quite a few of these initiatives. Two that have positioned themselves at the forefront of my focus are F. Myles Sciotto and his thesis with ambientAlternity. Dealing with using a users brain waves to create a real time dynamic space made specifically for that person. The second is an example given by Christiean Nold and his Bio Mapping which starts to look at the legitimacy of the ways that places affect emotional responses. The last example is Mr. Brown, the president and chief executive officer of IDEO, in today’s NYT's. The example that he used was this:
"The bet was for $50,000. It was offered by George Washington Hill, president of the American Tobacco Company, to the designer Raymond Loewy, in 1940. The challenge was to spruce up the packaging of Lucky Strike cigarettes. Loewy accepted the wager, and Hill asked when he expected to finish. “Oh, I don’t know,” drawled the designer. “Some nice spring morning I will feel like designing the Lucky package... I’ll call you then.”
"Loewy won the bet, and claimed the credit for the subsequent increase in Lucky Strike’s sales."
The point is that design ultimately effects environments which in turn affect people. You know the whole nature vs. nurture question...Nature is a viable piece of the equation. Positive Design attempts to take accountability for that and run with it. Let us employ the most advanced analysis equipment to determine the ways in which we can configure the places which we inhabit for the optimal environments for positive responses. Let us cultivate with our places attributes and feelings such as love, respect, collaboration, the desire for synergy, etc. Why is this not a standard way of thinking? Why is this not a common expectation?
