Convergence

If my last post I spotlighted mentors this post is about my peers. Since I first arrived here in LA in early September I was impressed with those around me, and had an overwhelming intuition that there had been a lot of individual inertia to bring this group of people here at this time. I listen to the inspiring stories of my fellow classmates and then reflect on my own background. I doubt that any of them has a less fantastic story that has culminated in their presence here.

The other night I was at a party with some friends. Some of my fellow colleges where there with me. I had a chance to speak with them about their previous life before coming to study architecture. Kyle talked of his previous life as a scientific researcher. He spoke of the almost whimsical and daring move it was to make the decision to move toward architecture. Yet at the same time it was well planned and thought out. I asked about the school application process, why he chose sci arc and how he postured his previous experience in a way that would be desirable to an architecture school. He spoke of his portfolio and its contents including images of the process of converting his car to vegetable oil. His wife Liz who was also accepted had intriguing images of microscope slides in her portfolio.

Another friend who was there that night, Paul talked of reading Deleuze and artistic fellowships in upstate New York. I tend to romanticize things but I don't care how dull you try and make that sound, to me it still sounds exciting.

These stories are valuable and I feel they need to be celebrated and recognized for what they are – amazing. A collection of these legends seems very fitting to me.
